12-year-old boy struck by car near along Berkshire Road in McKinney
Residents to attend April 6 council meeting to discuss speeding issues along Berkshire and Ridge roads in Stonebridge

A 12-year-old boy who is a student at Evans Middle School was struck by a car on March 31 when the boy stepped into the street on Berkshire Road in McKinney near Cypress Point, city of McKinney officials confirmed april 4.
The boy was reportedly walking eastbound along Berkshire Road about 25 feet west from the intersection of Cypress Point, according to eye witnesses who saw the boy step into the road, said Anna Folmnsbee, city spokesperson.
Witnesses told police that the boy's back was facing the street, or traffic and he just stepped out into the street, which caused his backpack strap to get caught in a side mirror of a passing Tahoe SUV that was traveling along Berkshire Road, Folmnsbee said. The incident occurred at about 3:25 p.m. and the passing car was reportedly traveling under or at the posted 30 mph speed limit, Folmnsbee said. The car was not speeding and police said that the speed the car was traveling at was not a factor in the accident, Folmnsbee said. The boy was repotedly was taken by a Careflight helicpoter ambulance to Children's Medical Center in Dallas. The boy's name was not made available as he is a juvenile.
Residents who live along Berkshire Road and near Ridge Road are planning to attend the April 6 McKinney City Council workshop meeting that will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the regular, bi-monthly council meeting on April 7 at City Hall, 222 N. Tennessee St., also at 5:30 p.m. to ask the city to install a traffic light or a four-way stop, an extension of the school zone and reduction of speed limits in neighborhoods. About 15 residents previously attended a council meeting last fall and asked the council to consider placing some form of traffic control devices along Berkshire Road to help curb speeding.
