McKinney City Council member at-large Bill Cox announced on Feb. 27 that he will not seek re-election for his current council seat in the May city election.
Cox said that he is not running for office for this upcoming three year term because he needs to spend more time with his family and working on his business - the Carey Cox Company, a commercial real estate company based in McKinney.
Cox, who is a McKinney High School graduate and whose family has lived in McKinney for generations, also currently serves as the mayor pro tem on the council. Cox serves as mayor when Mayor Bill Whitfield cannot attend a meeting or event. Working with the city staff and working on city projects are the two things Cox will miss most about his time spent on council.
One of the signature trademarks of Cox's tenure on council for the last three years is that he has almost always thanked the city staff members for their hard work during the council member comments at the end of almost every regular council meeting. Cox's own mother is a former city of McKinney employee. She is the former city secretary, and worked for the city in the 1970s and 1980s.
Cox is also an active member of the McKinney Chamber of Commerce and the McKinney Rotary Club.
In other news, Kevin Griffin has filed an application with the city to run in the at-large seat that is currently held by Cox.
Former District 4 Council member Brian Loughmiller has submitted his application to the city to run for mayor in the May 9, election. Local home building George Fuller, who also plays guitar in The Maylee Thomas Band, has submitted his application to the city to run for mayor, as well.
Local businessman Randall Wilder and former Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Don Day have both turned in their applications to run for the District 1 council seat currently held by Council member Gilda Garza.
Garza cannot run for re-election in the District 1 council seat due to term limits, but can run for the at-large seat per the city charter. Garza has picked up a candidate application with the city to run for the at-large seat, but had not turned it into city staff by close of business on Friday. The deadline to turn in candidate applications is 5 p.m. on March 9. Only people who turn in candidate applications by the deadline will be candidates in the May election.
