Within the month of June, S&S Wood Moldings of McKinney will become the first Texas based wood molding manufacturer to be certified with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Wood with the FSC stamp can be used in building projects as a credit for companies seeking Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design (LEED) certification through the United States Green Building Council.
The high-end custom molder of wood trim moved to McKinney nearly two years ago with financial help from McKinney Economic Development Corporation—a move that brought an established, environmentally-responsible company to the city.
“We have worked hard to build an excellent reputation, so getting our certification seemed like the next step for us.” said S&S Vice President Tom Seabolt.
The company purchases its wood products from mills that are certified by the FSC which insures that all wood is cultivated and/or processed in an environmentally responsible way; that is, without damaging the environment or disregarding the rights of people living nearby.
S&S goes further by efficiently collecting all leftover woodchips for use in biomass fuel, livestock bedding and other products. Company wide recycling is also in place and company officials are planning to increase the use of alternative fuels in transportation.
One of the most innovative and efficient processes that the company has developed is its Eco-Joint machine. The highly-guarded machine was custom-built to bind short planks of wood in such a way that the naked eye cannot detect the joint. The company has also accumulated an elaborate array of dies that replicate hand-carved patterns for trim around ceilings, doors and staircases.
Company President Terry Seabolt, Tom’s father, started the company in 1980 but soon expanded to North Texas because of the explosive growth going of the area. However, when the company decided to expand in 2007, Tom immediately set his sites on McKinney.
“I like it here,” he said. “And I knew it would be a great place to have a business,” he said.
