Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Travis Leon Ussery, Jr. was elected to the District 3 seat on the McKinney City Council on Jan. 17 as he received 54.93 percent of the early and Election Day votes.

He beat Court Appointed Special Advocate Robert O'Donnell who is married to former District 3 Councilwoman Julie Vargo, who received 45.07 percent of the votes. Ussery received 340 votes and O'Donnell received 279 votes.

"A win is a win. I certainly applaud my opponent's efforts. He ran a hard and clean campaign. I think we both ought to be proud that we didn't stopp to levels that some people wouldn't stoop to. I'm proud to sere a district that I've called home for the last 50 years," Ussery said after the election results were released.

Ussery follows in his father Travis Leon Ussery, Sr.'s footsteps as his father was also a council member.

Only a total of 619 people cast ballots in the election out of 7,958 registered voters in District 3. The election results are posted on the Collin County Elections Web site www.co.collin.tx.us .

Ussery will have to step down from the P & Z as he is now a council member and a new person will be appointed to replace him on the P & Z by council. Ussery replaces former District 3 Council member Bill Vitz, who recently resigned from the council due to health issues.

Ussery will be up for re-election in the May general council and mayoral election. The District 1, at-large seat that is held by Council member Bill Cox and the mayoral seat will be up for re-election as well.
